In the 1960s, under a climate of freedom and openness, ancient Ireland still maintained a rigid and conservative atmosphere. Here, all girls considered "fallen" were sent to the Magdalene Asylum for reformation, where the awaited was not gentle care, but endless darkness and despair. Margaret (Anne-Marie Duff) is raped by her cousin at a family wedding; the incident spreads quickly at the wedding, and instead of receiving justice, she is sent away as an "unclean girl." The lively and beautiful Bernadette (Nora-Jane Noone) becomes the object of boys' pursuit and pays the price for her "frivolity." Rose (Dorothy Duffy) becomes pregnant out of wedlock and is forced to give up her child for the sake of her so-called future. The three girls arrive at the Magdalene Asylum, unaware that it is a place of irreversible despair...
