The rational water engineer Walter Faber (Sam Shepard) is involved in a plane crash and is forced to land in the Mexican desert. However, after being rescued, Walter unusually decides to embark on a journey to the Mexican jungle with a German businessman he has never met, in search of a friend he has not contacted for many years. Upon arriving at the friend's residence, they discover that the friend has committed suicide. Walter's second journey begins on a ferry. In his mid-forties, Walter encounters a charming young girl, Sabeth (Julie Delpy). Sabeth, who is passionate about art, and Walter, an expert in science and technology, seem to be from different worlds, yet an uncontrollable affection gradually grows between them, leading to a shared trip to southern Europe. By chance, Walter learns that Sabeth is the daughter of his former girlfriend, Hannah (Barbara Sukowa). Surprised, Walter cannot help but question if she is his biological daughter.
