17-year-old Geneviève (played by Catherine Deneuve) is the daughter of the owner of an umbrella shop in Cherbourg, France; 20-year-old Guy (played by Nino Castelnuovo) works at a car repair shop and lives with his aunt and his aunt's adopted daughter, Madeleine (played by Ellen Farner). Geneviève and Guy are a couple, but their romance is constantly hindered by Geneviève's mother. When the Algerian War breaks out, Guy is forced to serve two years of military duty at the front. On the night before their separation, they have a relationship. During the days apart, Geneviève rarely receives letters from Guy, and she begins to doubt his sincerity. With her mother's matchmaking, she marries a persistent Parisian jeweler, Roland Cassard (played by Marc Michel), while pregnant. Two years later, after completing his military service, Guy returns to Cherbourg, hoping to reclaim his love with Geneviève, only to find that everything has changed... This film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 37th Academy Awards and won the Palme d'Or at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival. All the dialogues in this film are sung, and the music is exceptional.
