This film is based on real historical events and tells the story of one of the most famous rebels in American history: Newton Knight. Knight was a local from Mississippi who defected from the Confederate army during the Civil War, organized a group of soldiers, and established a country called "Jones's Free State" in his hometown. Knight not only married a black female slave and refused to return to serve in the Confederate army, but he also liberated enslaved people in Mississippi, which was rare in the America of that time, making him a legendary figure in the region.
