In the early days of reform and opening up, Li Xiaojun (played by Leon Lai) bids farewell to his girlfriend Xiaoting (played by Yang Gongru) and moves from Tianjin (Wuxi in the Mandarin version) to Hong Kong to make a living, hoping one day to earn enough money to bring Xiaoting over and have a grand wedding. However, life turns out to be much harder than he imagined. Li Xiaojun meets Li Qiao (played by Maggie Cheung), who has also come to Hong Kong from the mainland to make a living but avoids discussing her identity. They bond over their mutual love for Teresa Teng, alleviating their loneliness in a foreign land, and through their relationship, they develop genuine love. Yet, as fate would have it, they ultimately part ways; Li Xiaojun becomes Xiaoting's husband, while Li Qiao ends up with Brother Leopard (played by Eric Tsang), who is involved in the underworld. However, their fate is not over just because of Teresa Teng.
