Ron (played by Tom Cruise) is a competitive boy who yearns for a man's life from a young age. The young Ron is completely captivated by President Johnson's provocative speech about the Vietnam War, and an impulse to challenge and sacrifice for his country gradually grows within him. After losing a wrestling match, the determined Ron resolutely bids farewell to his girlfriend Donna and his college life, embarking on a path to join the military. However, upon arriving in Vietnam, Ron does not find the heroic qualities he has longed for; instead, he witnesses tragic events that are inhumane. Ron's friend Wilson is killed by Ron's own bullet in a chaotic battle, and soon after, Ron is paralyzed by gunfire and sent back to the United States. Sitting in a wheelchair, Ron continues to hold on to his faith in the war that America has waged, but after reuniting with his girlfriend Donna, she heartbreakingly believes that Ron's tragedy is the fault of the war. Nightmares haunt Ron, and he visits the grave of his comrade Wilson. In the midst of an anti-war outcry, Ron finally awakens.
