The story takes place in a remote small town where veteran detective Dave (Tommy Lee Jones) is investigating a violent murder case that has caused considerable panic in the community. As the investigation deepens, Dave discovers that the case becomes increasingly enigmatic, with a man named Balboni (John Goodman) emerging as a primary suspect. A movie star arrives in town, coincidentally, he is none other than Dave's childhood friend Elrod (Peter Sarsgaard).
