The story takes place in China in the 1980s, where young painter Zheng Zhuang (played by Zhao Youliang) returns from out of town and moves into a residential building located in Qiansanmen. To Zheng Zhuang's surprise, the elevator girl here turns out to be Qin Shuang (played by Xiao Xiong), someone he had encountered once before. Living in the same building as Zheng Zhuang is Xiao Lingxia (played by Han Ying) and her family. Compared to the naive Qin Shuang, Xiao Lingxia is more calculating, knows how to navigate situations, and is determined to secure more benefits for herself. In an effort to win over Director Yuan, Xiao Lingxia wants to introduce a partner for Yuan's daughter Yuan Xiaoshen; however, the latter declines as she has secretly liked Zheng Zhuang all along. Zheng Zhuang decides to participate in the national art exhibition, but he has been lacking inspiration. Qin Shuang becomes his muse, and through their collective efforts, Zheng Zhuang ultimately creates a satisfactory work, igniting sparks of romance between the two.
