Scholar Zhang Yudan (played by Huang Guoqiang) unexpectedly meets Lu Feifei (played by Zhao Xueqin), the daughter of the local lord Lu Gong, while she is out hunting, and falls in love with her. However, Lu Feifei dies suddenly due to excessive killings. Lu Gong buries his daughter in the Xiao Temple where Zhang Yudan is studying. That night, Zhang Yudan offers incense at the mourning hall to express his sorrow and soon falls asleep on the ground. In the dead of night, a series of heartbreaking screams come from the coffin, waking up the sleeping Zhang Yudan. A female Taoist comes in and tells Zhang Yudan that if he recites scriptures ten thousand times for Feifei's soul, she will be freed from her punishment in the underworld. Hearing this, Yudan begins to recite daily without interruption. Day after day, Feifei finally appears before him, and the two express their longing for each other. A few years later, on a dark and windy night, the messengers of the underworld arrive unexpectedly and take away the ecstatic Feifei, leaving Yudan heartbroken but powerless. The Earth God (played by Liu Jinshan) informs Yudan that the King of Hell has sent Feifei to be reincarnated, which brings Yudan great joy... This film is adapted from the chapter "The Daughter of Lu Gong" in "Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio."
