This film centers around the inheritance of the Shanxi Tianchengyuan bank, which was rich enough to rival nations during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, showcasing the rise and fall of the financial industry dubbed "China's Wall Street" over a century. The story is woven through the memories of an elderly man nearing the end of his life: Mr. Kang, the head of Tianchengyuan (played by Zhang Tielin), has four sons. However, the eldest is born deaf and mute, the second is impulsive and gets paralyzed in an accident, and the youngest goes mad after his newlywed wife is tragically robbed and killed in Tianjin, leaving only the third son (played by Aaron Kwok) to inherit the family business. But Kang San harbors deep resentment towards his father because he believes his father stole away his former lover (played by Hao Lei). Mr. Kang hopes that she will bear children for the Kang family to continue its lineage, but she vows never to comply. Madam Kang has repeatedly expressed her feelings to Kang San, but he remains respectful towards his stepmother and dares not overstep boundaries. Seeing that the manager Dai from the Beijing branch is exceptionally intelligent, Mr. Kang employs both rewards and threats to win over manager Qiu (played by Ding Zhicheng), making him wholeheartedly support the young master. However, Kang San has other plans... The film is based on the novel "Silver Valley" by Cheng Yi.
