Ludvik is a government official during the Czechoslovak Iron Curtain era. One night, he and his wife attend a government-hosted banquet, where he learns that his superior has been arrested by the secret police. Fearing for his own safety, he comes home only to find that his house has mysteriously lost power, and there are signs of someone having entered through the front door. Even the phone seems to be malfunctioning. He suspects he is being watched by the secret police, and a parked car on the street appears to be a surveillance post. The couple begins to argue and blame each other out of fear for their future, ultimately leading to a silent estrangement. They believe they will be the next victims, and a series of connected events amplifies their fear, causing them anxiety about being captured. They even contemplate suicide but do not go through with it for various reasons. The next day, they have become desperate, quietly awaiting the worst outcome.
