Young and promising advertising designer Lu Jiayao (played by Tony Leung) accidentally injures someone while trying to prevent a disturbance caused by troublemakers, resulting in a three-year prison sentence. In prison, his straightforward personality offends the gang leader, and he endures relentless bullying. An old inmate, Zhong Tianzheng (played by Chow Yun-fat), can't stand to watch and helps him, leading to a deep friendship forged in adversity. Zhong Tianzheng once had a perfect family but accidentally killed his wife due to his gambling addiction, leading him to prison. As he reminisces about the past, he feels deep regret and is determined to turn over a new leaf after being released. However, by standing up for Lu Jiayao, he offends the ruthless warden (played by Cheung Yiu-leung) who misuses his power, and he becomes embroiled in the prison's underworld. When he sees no way out, he abandons his philosophy of "enduring what can be endured" and resolves to retaliate with violence.
