In 1923, the Tibetan herder Rolbu (played by Cai Xiangzengren) roams the plateau, living by stealing horses. For his child Tashi, Rolbu offers a sacrificial sheep to pray for blessings. When the chieftain's father dies, the old woman is moved by the kindness of the chieftain's family, but she worries that Rolbu cannot find peace due to his theft. Rolbu and his accomplices rob gifts sent by the government to the monastery, intending to use the stolen goods to repay their vows for Tashi. After the robbery, the furious chieftain expels Rolbu’s family, and from then on, Rolbu and his wife Zhuoma (played by Dan Zhiji) and Tashi can only wander the grasslands.
