This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by American novelist Dennis Lehane. In 1954, federal marshal Teddy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his partner Chuck (Mark Ruffalo) arrive by boat at the Shutter Island psychiatric prison near Boston to investigate a bizarre disappearance case. A female inmate, Rachel (Emily Mortimer), who killed her own children, mysteriously escapes from a heavily guarded cell and hides deep within the island. Teddy suspects the chief psychiatrist, Dr. John Cawley (Ben Kingsley), is deliberately concealing the truth, and reveals to Chuck that his real purpose for coming to the island is to find the warden who set fire to his wife Dolores (Michelle Williams) and expose the crimes of the U.S. government using mental patients for human scientific experiments. However, as the investigation deepens, the truth becomes increasingly elusive...
