The story begins in the year 1154, following the death of Geoffrey V, when Henry II (played by Peter O'Toole) ascends to the throne. For a long time, the English royal family had adopted a repressive attitude towards the Saxon natives; however, Henry II's best friend Thomas (played by Richard Burton) is a Saxon. After ascending the throne, Henry II promotes him to Prime Minister. Thomas possesses extraordinary wisdom and courage, and under his leadership, the British Empire achieves repeated victories on the battlefield, continually expanding its territory. Subsequently, Henry II sends Thomas to the church to become the Archbishop. This position, close to the people, allows Thomas to empathize with the plight of the poor, and soon he gains the affection of the populace, which begins to make Henry II uneasy.
