After their father's funeral, the three brothers have not spoken to each other for a year. The eldest, Francis (played by Owen Wilson), plans an elaborate trip to India and tells his brothers it's to rediscover themselves and their family bond. Although they are not enthusiastic about the trip, the second brother, Peter (played by Adrien Brody), and the third brother, Jack (played by Jason Schwartzman), who are both trying to escape their miserable lives, agree to Francis's plan. The brothers embark on a laughter-filled journey across India on a luxury train, collecting strange souvenirs along the way. After flirting with a female train attendant, releasing a cobra they bought as a souvenir, and getting into a big fight on the train, they are unceremoniously thrown off the train along with all their luggage by the furious train conductor. Though everything spirals out of Francis's control, this unexpected turn of events brings the three brothers closer to the true purpose of their trip... This film was nominated for the main competition at the 64th Venice Film Festival.
