Wilton (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a poor boy, comes to London from Ireland to become a tennis coach, swearing to use his tennis skills to break into the upper class, who are passionate about the sport. After meeting rich playboy Tom, he gets an opportunity, and Tom's sister, Chloe (Emily Mortimer), falls for him. With the help of Tom's father, Wilton successfully integrates into high society. Just as he is about to propose to Chloe, he encounters Tom's girlfriend, Nora (Scarlett Johansson), an actress from America, who is also striving to enter high society. Their similar experiences lead to genuine feelings, but Wilton doesn't give up on his plans for Nora. Once all his dreams come true, Wilton reunites with Nora, who has broken up with Tom, reigniting their old romance, and he starts to juggle between her and his wife. Soon, Nora becomes pregnant and refuses to have an abortion, bringing Wilton to the pivotal moment of his life.
