Karen (played by Meryl Streep) is a vain rich girl who leaves her native Denmark to marry a baron in East Africa, Kenya, in pursuit of the title of Baroness. However, the title does not bring her a happy marriage. Fortunately, in that vast land, Karen can often go hunting and exploring, and she gradually falls in love with this magical land. During a hunting accident, she encounters a young British nobleman, Denys (played by Robert Redford). Following the breakdown of her marriage and her husband's departure, Karen takes on the task of managing the estate independently. Through hard work, she develops a deep friendship with the servants on the plantation, and her relationship with Denys seems to progress. However, fate does not allow Karen to sail smoothly from that point on; a devastating fire forces her to sell the estate to alleviate her financial strain, and later, Denys's accidental death in a plane crash gives her another heavy blow. After enduring life's trials, Karen ultimately bids farewell to the land where she spent her youth and passion... The film won seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay at the 58th Academy Awards in 1986.
