After being abandoned by her husband, Rice Aroma (played by Tao Hong) lives alone with her mentally challenged son (played by Yang Qing) in Aba, Sichuan. A fellow villager, Ma Jinhua (played by Wang Jinghua), encourages her to go to a small coal mine in the north to find a single man to marry, as compensation from the mine will be substantial when accidents occur. Rice Aroma travels a long way north to Henan and settles in a small coal mine. After some selection, she sets her sights on coal miner Wang Tuozi (played by Sun Liang). Tuozi was previously rejected by a woman and intended to cohabit without marrying, but he couldn't resist when the mentally challenged son kept calling him "dad." Eventually, he marries the Sichuan woman, Rice Aroma, which leaves Da Li (played by Pan Taiming), who was once rejected by her, feeling despondent.
