The story takes place during the Tang dynasty in the year of Zhenyuan. The old lady (Wang Fulai) takes her daughter Cui Yingying (Chen Lifeng) and their maid Hongniang (Liu Xin) to Pujusi Temple to hold a ritual for the deceased Chancellor Cui. However, on the way, their carriage is startled, and they are saved by the scholar Zhang Sheng (Su Youpeng) from Luoyang, avoiding a tragedy. Yingying immediately falls in love with the handsome Zhang Sheng. The clever Hongniang notices this and wishes to play the matchmaker. Zhang Sheng also develops feelings and approaches the abbot to propose, but the old lady does not agree.
