The film is adapted from the bestselling novel "The Dog Who Loved" by British author Louis de Bernières, telling the true and touching story of a puppy named Koko who travels across Australia in search of its former owner. The red dog in the film is played by a two-year-old dog named Koko, a breed said to be a descendant of the Collie, which is now widely distributed across Australia. In a iron ore mine in northwest Australia, there is a red dog named Red. After being saved once by a young American named John (played by Josh Lucas), Red takes John as its master. John falls in love with the mine's secretary (played by Rachael Taylor).
