There is a gray area at the border between the United States and Mexico, a paradise for drug dealers and killers who trade and shoot without regard for the law. Kate (played by Emily Blunt) is an FBI agent who, driven by her ideals of justice, comes here to join a special task force of the federal government, becoming the subordinate of Matt (played by Josh Brolin). Alejandro (played by Benicio Del Toro) is a former agent who once infiltrated the drug lord's circle. Matt seeks him out, hoping that his experience will help guide the task force strategically. However, Alejandro, having experienced hell, acts unpredictably, often triggering Kate's fragile and sensitive nerves. As the investigation deepens, the specter of death looms over each member of the task force. Time and again, they brush against death, and Kate's worldview begins to waver.
