Peggy (Moira Shearer) is a talented ballet dancer whose passion for ballet makes her feel that she was born to dance. She performs in the ballet "The Red Shoes," playing the role of the dancer who dances to her death in red shoes. Her performance receives unanimous acclaim in the industry, and her career takes off. Later, she meets composer Julian (Marius Goring) and quickly falls in love. To be with him, Peggy abandons her career, but the calm of married life becomes unbearable for her; it seems there is always some magic calling her back to the stage. Listening to her inner calling, Peggy leaves Julian and returns to the stage, but gradually, she remembers the dancer she once portrayed in red shoes, feeling their figures begin to overlap. Anxiously, Peggy suddenly realizes that what is most important in her life is not dance, but family. She rushes out of the theater wanting to reclaim Julian's love, but a train comes crashing down, ending her young life. The film won the 1949 Oscar for Best Score and Best Art Direction.
