In the 1930s, the owner of a German chocolate factory is Russian and finds himself at an impasse in both his marriage and his career, feeling utterly hopeless. He fantasizes about escaping his life, observing himself as if his soul had left his body. When he sees a street vagabond, the man appears to look exactly like him. In a bid to "swap identities," he kills the other man. This film is significantly different from other works by Fassbinder, as it uses a script by a renowned screenwriter and is adapted from a novel by Nabokov. The brilliant dialogues seem to concentrate in the first third of the film. The film is bold and kitschy, attracting widespread criticism.
