Jude (played by Christopher Eccleston) grows up in the countryside, determined to change his fate through knowledge, with the goal of attending university as his life's ambition. However, youthful desires lead him to an affair with a local girl, shattering his dreams of college. Soon, the girl moves to Australia in search of a better life. Jude is left with his dreams, which continue to sprout and grow. To gain admission to university, Jude moves closer to the university town, desperately seeking opportunities. There, he secretly falls for his cousin, Sue (played by Kate Winslet). Bound by familial ties, they both dare not break the taboo. When Sue marries someone else, Jude finally breaks free from the feelings he has suppressed for so long. They disregard societal norms and consequences, wanting only to be together. They fear nothing, even if it leads them to the ends of the earth. However, misfortune eventually strikes. Their child pays a heavy price for everything, and Jude and Sue's relationship faces a harsh winter.
