"Gravity's Edge" (2013) sees the father-son duo team up again behind the scenes. Last time, father Alfonso Cuarón directed, but this time son Jonás takes the helm while the father serves as producer. It's also a survival story, showcasing that the thrills of danger aren't limited to outer space; Earth can be more perilous. Gael García Bernal plays Moses, a Mexican illegal immigrant dreaming of family reunification, who attempts to cross the U.S. border. Little does he know, he encounters border patrol agents and violent xenophobes who abuse their power and gun down anyone in their sights, turning his quest for freedom into a terrifying fight for survival. The border desert becomes a battlefield, and the teddy bear given by his family is either a talisman or a death sentence. The film is akin to a modern exodus, ringing alarm bells for the rise of right-wing populism in America today.
