In the year 2000, in California, USA, a renowned Afghan writer named Amir (played by Khalid Abdalla) receives a phone call that takes him back to his childhood... In 1978, Kabul, Afghanistan, Amir (played by Zekiria Ebrahimi) is a wealthy boy, and Hassan (played by Ahmad Khan Mahmoodzada), the son of servant Ali, is his loyal companion and playmate. The two participate in a traditional kite-flying competition, where Amir experiences something unforgettable, and their fates change forever: Ali and Hassan leave Amir's home, disappearing without a trace; with the outbreak of the Afghan War, Amir and his father immigrate to the United States, starting a new life. The phone call comes from Rahim (played by Shaun Toub), an old friend of Amir's father, hoping Amir can go to Afghanistan to find Hassan's son, Sohrab (played by Ali Danish Bakhty Ari). Awaiting Amir are not only the war-torn homeland and painful memories but also a difficult-to-speak secret.
