The story takes place in 1950s Britain, where the war has caused significant damage to the city. In the midst of chaos, a woman named Vera (Imelda Staunton) struggles to maintain a quiet and stable life with her husband and children. On the surface, Vera appears to be a cleaning lady, but a secret lies deep within her heart. In her spare time, Vera helps women who become pregnant during the war to have abortions in a makeshift operating room provided by her friend Lily (Ruth Sheen), which is illegal in Britain at the time. Reg (Eddie Marsan) joins Vera's family, bringing joy to their lives, and his wedding with Vera's daughter Ethel (Alex Kelly) fills everyone with happiness. However, during the wedding, a knock at the door is not a friendly blessing, but rather the police arriving to arrest Vera, exposing her actions to the public.
