The story takes place in West Germany in 1958. Johann (played by Alexander Fehling) is a court prosecutor specializing in litigation cases related to violations of traffic safety laws. One day, in the courthouse, he encounters a journalist named Thomas (played by André Szymanski), who is loudly accusing a high school teacher of having been a guard at Auschwitz during World War II, yet has escaped legal consequences. This incident prompts Johann to deeply reflect on the awareness and attitudes of those around him regarding Germany's past atrocities, resulting in shock. Thus, Johann decides to start searching for survivors of the Auschwitz concentration camp and have them identify the war criminals who are still at large. As the investigation deepens, Johann is horrified to discover the number of people involved in this matter, realizing that even he cannot escape culpability.
