Zhong Li (played by Qin Han) fell in love with a girl named Zhong Ping Mei (played by Lin Fengjiao). However, the Hakka people's rules prohibit marriage between those with the same surname. Helplessly, Zhong Li went alone to Shenyang to study and further his education. Two years later, Zhong Li returned to Zhong Ping Mei's side, bringing her along to elope to Shenyang, where they formed a small, warm family. Due to financial pressure, Zhong Li became a taxi driver, but he lost his job after leaving a pimp in the wilderness. Strong national pride led Zhong Li to reject a high-paying job offered by the Japanese, plunging the family into poverty and hardship, with all the burdens falling on Zhong Ping Mei, who was pregnant at the time. Subsequently, the couple moved to Beiping, and during this time, Zhong Li completed his first work, "Oleander," thus embarking on a long literary journey. Unfortunately, Zhong Li fell ill with a lung disease, requiring multiple hospitalizations and incurring huge medical expenses. However, Zhong Ping Mei did not complain about her husband and remained steadfast in supporting Zhong Li's dream.
