Jonathan is a wealthy magnate in New York who feels he has little time left due to a serious illness. He decides to meet his son John (played by Charles Laughton) and his fiancée Gloria. Unfortunately, Gloria is unable to attend due to an accident. To fulfill his father's wish, John asks Annie (played by Deanna Durbin), who works in the wardrobe department, to impersonate his fiancée.
