In 2003, Lily, who immigrated to the U.S. five years earlier, returns to New Taipei with her two daughters, Fangyi and Fang'an, after being diagnosed with breast cancer. She reunites with her estranged husband, Zonghui. Fangyi falls far behind in school due to her struggles with Chinese, earning her the nickname "American Girl" from her classmates. Reckless and feeling powerless in the face of her mother’s illness, all she desires is to return to the U.S. Lily, constantly worried about her cancer worsening, cannot understand Fangyi's rebellious behavior, leading to heightened tensions among family members. Under the pressures of cultural conflict, financial struggles, and illness, the clashes between Lily and Fangyi escalate, peaking when Fang'an is quarantined in the hospital during the SARS crisis.
