Silvia (played by Nicole Kidman) is a United Nations interpreter from Africa. Unintentionally, she overhears a political conspiracy involving a plot to assassinate an African head of state during a UN assembly. They communicate in an African dialect, but Silvia, who is fluent in the language, secretly listens in on their conversation. Silvia thus becomes a target that others are eager to eliminate. The FBI sends agent Tobin (played by Sean Penn) to act as Silvia's temporary bodyguard. The two characters, who are very different from each other, gradually learn about each other's backgrounds during their time together. At this point, Tobin suspects that Silvia may be hiding a secret, and there seems to be a deep-rooted enmity between her and the African head of state involved in the assassination plot. This leads Tobin to question whether Silvia is truly a victim of the situation or a participant in the conspiracy. Tobin harbors doubts while also needing to fulfill his duty to protect Silvia. The two are drawn to each other amidst suspicion. In an increasingly dangerous environment, they must uncover the truth as quickly as possible.
