Old Left (played by Anthony Wong) is a thoroughgoing leftist from the old generation in Hong Kong. He hums the songs "Ode to the Motherland" and "Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy," holding high the great banner of serving the people. His greatest wish in life is to visit Tiananmen in Beijing. Old Left dedicates his life to serving the people, completely neglecting his own family, which causes dissatisfaction in his son, Left Zhong (played by Ronald Cheng). Left Zhong has a childhood sweetheart named Lu Min (played by Karen Mok), who went abroad to study after high school. Left Zhong doesn't want to carry the "Left" burden for his entire life like his father and seizes the opportunity presented by the mainland's reform and opening up to embark on an adventurous journey to make his fortune. Left Zhong and Lu Min return to Hong Kong in 1997, battered and bruised. How will Old Left's life ultimately come to an end?
