Yang Mingyuan is tired of the bandit life and returns to his hometown with his son, Kanzi. He asks his brother, the town mayor, for a piece of land to open a coffin shop and do good deeds. Yang Mingyuan's former lover, Dou Gua, is now married to the butcher Hu Wei, and he demands that Hu Wei return Dou Gua to him, but is refused. Dou Gua secretly weeps upon seeing Yang Mingyuan in the house. Soon, the coffin shop opens, and Yang Mingyuan and Yang Mingshan prepare to bury their deceased parents. The coffin shop does decent business. However, Hu Wei and wealthy man Li Zhaolian, who hold grudges against Yang Mingyuan from ten years ago, do not want to see him prosper, and they conspire to drive him away. In the town, a poor family is holding a funeral. Yang Mingyuan and his crew bring a coffin to assist this family and greet the townspeople warmly. However, the townspeople, knowing he was once a bandit, keep their distance. In the coffin shop, Yang is teaching Kanzi to study hard when Yang Mingshan runs in to tell him that the coffin they just delivered has been returned. The sunset paints the sky red as Yang Mingyuan squats among the weeds, lost in thought. Dou Gua quietly approaches from behind, and when Yang Mingyuan sees her, he is stunned; suddenly, they embrace passionately. In the morning, Yang Mingyuan goes to Hu Wei's house, demanding once more for Dou Gua to be returned to him. Hu Wei flatly refuses and continues to torment Dou Gua. Li Zhaolian's son, Gui Gui, bullies Hu Wei's daughter, Hua Hua, and Liu Ma gives Gui Gui a lesson. An infuriated Li Zhaolian, along with others, ransacks Hu Wei's home, causing destruction. Yang Mingyuan brings gold bars and offers his entire coffin shop to Hu Wei in exchange for Dou Gua, but Hu Wei still refuses. Despite becoming wealthy after being a bandit, Yang Mingyuan is still looked down upon by the townspeople, and the wealthy continue to bully him, reigniting his dormant bandit nature. Drunk, Yang Mingyuan lies in the desert, and a remark from Gui Gui wounds him deeply. He gradually calms down, revealing a murderous intent on his face. Gui Gui dies, and a desperate Li Zhaolian blames Hu Wei for it. Thus, the Li and Hu families gather their men, ready to fight to the death. The streets of the town are filled with the sounds of gunfire. People flee in panic outside the town. Hu Wei is killed by a spear, while Li Zhaolian is blown up by a bomb at the well. Town mayor Yang Mingshan also gets shot and falls. The town is engulfed in flames, with corpses everywhere. In the dead of night, a loud crash erupts from the coffin shop. Kanzi and Hua Hua stand outside the town, watching as the entire town is engulfed in a sea of fire...
