In 1936, during the Long March, the Red Army passed through the Tibetan areas by the Jinsha River. The Kuomintang colluded with the local warlord Qiu Wanli, attempting to obstruct the Red Army's crossing of the river to move north. Qiu Wanli ordered his henchmen to impersonate the Red Army and kidnap the only daughter of the chieftain, Sangge, named Zhuma, to incite conflict between the chieftain and the Red Army. The Red Army adhered to the party's national policy, rescued Zhuma, and crossed the Jinsha River to advance to the border of the Tibetan region. Qiu Wanli preemptively infiltrated the Tibetan area, claiming that Zhuma had been killed by the Red Army, and supplied weapons and ammunition for the chieftain to fight the Red Army. To counter the enemy's rumors, Red Army instructor Jin Ming led a squad to return Zhuma home. However, the soldier sent to deliver a message to the chieftain was killed by the enemy. In a critical moment, Jin Ming risked ascending the mountain to negotiate with the chieftain. The chieftain was skeptical and sent a trusted confidant down the mountain to ascertain the truth. Unfortunately, the messenger was again ambushed by Qiu Wanli and, injured, made his way to the Red Army’s camp to report the situation. Under Qiu Wanli's instigation, the chieftain was about to kill Jin Ming, who was being held as a hostage, when Zhuma and the Red Army arrived, revealing the enemy's true intentions to the chieftain. Qiu Wanli hurriedly fled and fell into the Jinsha River, drowning. The Red Army cleared the path and continued northward.
