Thomas (played by Benno Fuehrmann) was once a soldier, but he was discharged due to a mistake he made. He returned to his hometown in disgrace, unable to find work, and spent his days idly, sinking into despair. The death of his mother brought a turning point in Thomas's life; he inherited her estate and moved into the house where she lived. By chance, Thomas met a Turkish immigrant named Ali (played by Hilmi Sözer), who ran a small tavern and had many connections.
