During the Vietnam War, American soldiers en route to the battlefield would stop in Wan Chai, leading to a unique atmosphere filled with tattoo artists, panhandlers, mixed-race children searching for their fathers, 'Ah Fei', and bar girls who were actually prostitutes, creating a distinctive scene from the late 1950s onward. Bar mamasan returns to find girls to work in the bar, and Lai Shuiwei (played by Ha Man-hsi) comes from a poor background, with decent looks and a stubborn personality, along with several hometown sisters from the Tai O fishing village to start a career in the meat trade. Initially, the fishing girls are mocked by other bar girls, but with the guidance of the experienced Xiao Lingyu (played by Yu Chien), they quickly catch up, and the renamed Shui Meili (Lai Shuiwei) stands out. The dashing yet reckless 'mixed-race' boy Jimmy (played by Anthony Wong) lost his mother at a young age and sees Xiao Lingyu as his possession after she raised him; however, he has no feelings for her, only thoughts of his father who is nowhere to be found. Not only Xiao Lingyu is infatuated with Jimmy, many bar girls blame Xiao Lingyu for being too possessive, as he doesn’t give them a chance to get close. Shui Meili is also attracted to him. One time, when Jimmy is ambushed by Ah Fei, Shui Meili cleverly saves him and shares her intel about his father's name. The two secretly begin a romance behind Xiao Lingyu's back. Later, Shui Meili tears her relationship with Xiao Lingyu apart for Jimmy, voluntarily leaving the bar, while Jimmy, having found his father, forgets his initial promises and heads to America. The unspoken rules of the street lead Shui Meili to become a street prostitute, but even that opportunity is denied by Xiao Lingyu. With no choice, she ends up in the massage parlors, struggling for years in worsening conditions. Fortunately, she finds help from the gang leader Wang Ying (played by Yip Tak-hin), and Shui Meili makes a comeback, successfully expanding her business to Tsim Sha Tsui in just a few years. With the end of the Vietnam War, Wan Chai becomes desolate, and Xiao Lingyu becomes like a candle in the wind. When Shui Meili, out of gratitude, visits her, Jimmy just happens to return to Hong Kong. Learning that he is back to find a wife, everyone assumes Shui Meili will rekindle her romance with him, and although she has long given up on him, she feels ripples of emotion once again. However, he has transformed into an ordinary person and has completely forgotten their past. Subsequently, Shui Meili intends to focus all her energy on her business, but the changing times are beyond her and her beloved partner Wang Ying's control.
