A mysterious ancient Chinese scroll, containing immense power, has attracted the attention of evil villains who all want to obtain it to rule the world; a nameless monk from Tibet, China (played by Chow Yun-fat), has been living a transient life to protect the scroll, having hidden in almost every corner of the world. Until one day, the monk feels tired and decides to find a suitable person to become his disciple and inherit this daunting task. A street punk named Kar (played by Seann William Scott) inadvertently saves the monk, and perhaps due to a psychic connection, the monk senses that this troublemaker is his destined successor, thus deciding to pass on all his martial arts skills to Kar. Kar embarks on his difficult fate of fighting against evil.
