Is he a genius or an idiot? Seventeen-year-old Noel, suffering from leukemia, feels smarter than anyone else, unwilling to conform to the rules that govern the majority. Winter in Iceland is like a white prison, with frozen rivers burying his youthful passion, deepening his sense of loneliness. He dreams of escaping this place with the girl he admires, breaking free from his cage, but fate seems to be against him. His desperate attempts lead only to frustration and disappointment, ultimately resulting in everything spiraling out of control, where only a terrible price can buy him the freedom he longs for. This is director Dagur Kári's first feature film, portraying the tumultuous growth of adolescence with sensitivity and empathy. The bittersweet ending is even more thought-provoking.
