The story takes place in the desolate West, where the living conditions are extremely harsh and resources are severely lacking. A man named John (Warren Beatty) arrives in this area, and with his wisdom and courage, he goes against the odds and establishes a brothel, earning himself a place in the small town. As time goes by, John's business becomes increasingly prosperous, attracting even the renowned leading lady, Mrs. Miller (Julie Christie), who comes to join in.
