The story takes place in the desolate West, where the living conditions are extremely harsh and resources are severely lacking. A man named John (Warren Beatty) arrives in this area, and with his wisdom and courage, he goes against the odds and establishes a brothel, earning himself a place in the small town. As time goes by, John's business becomes increasingly prosperous, attracting even the renowned leading lady, Mrs. Miller (Julie Christie), who comes to join in. During their time together, the charming and highly promising John catches Miller's attention, and she too finds herself captivated by his endless charm; the two gradually grow closer.
