During the American Civil War, Adele Hugo (Isabelle Adjani), the second daughter of the great French writer Victor Hugo, travels across the ocean to Halifax, Canada, in search of her lover—British officer Pinson (Bruce Robinson). However, Pinson has already fallen for another and is exceptionally cold towards Adele. Despite her desperate attempts to win him back, Adele's efforts are in vain. Meanwhile, the high cost of living in the area becomes unbearable for her, forcing her to repeatedly ask her father for money. At this time, Hugo is in exile on a small island, with his wife seriously ill, and both hope that Adele will return home, but she insists on staying in Canada. The failure of her love makes Adele frequently think of her sister who drowned, and her mental state begins to deteriorate. Subsequently, Pinson leaves Halifax with his troop to another island, Barbados, and Adele follows him there, where her condition worsens, and she is eventually sent back to France, spending her last days in a nursing home, quietly passing away during World War I. This film is a biopic about Victor Hugo’s daughter Adele, with Isabelle Adjani receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Actress that year.
