A British plane is shot down by the German army while flying over the Sahara Desert, and the pilot, injured and unable to remember who he is, is referred to as "the English patient." Hanna is a nurse in a wartime hospital who decides to stay behind to care for the English patient. They take refuge in an abandoned monastery in Italy, far from the chaos of war, where the English patient lies quietly on a wooden bed, and an old book on the windowsill gradually stirs his memories... A love story ignites amidst the fire of war, transcending morals and altering the course of events. Archaeologist Count Almásy (Ralph Fiennes) accompanies explorers to the Sahara Desert for research and meets the pilot Geoffrey and his wife, Katherine (Kristin Scott Thomas). Katherine's talent and beauty captivate Almásy, and as they explore ancient cave paintings in the desert, they discover their shared interests. Ultimately, morals triumph over passion. After Katherine and Almásy part ways, Geoffrey discovers his wife's infidelity. Heartbroken, Geoffrey attempts to end his life and that of his wife and Almásy in a plane crash. Almásy narrowly escapes, but Katherine is severely injured, and Geoffrey loses his life. Almásy rushes to the side of the woman he loves and promises to get her out of the desert to find help. However, things don't turn out as easy as imagined. To save her, he is charged with treason, leading to his eventual demise. He keeps his promise, but Katherine has already left him forever in the cold... Almásy places Katherine's body on the plane, which is shot down by the Germans while flying over the Sahara, leading to the opening scene of the film. During her time caring for "the English patient," Hanna meets Kip, an Indian bomb disposal expert, and they begin to develop feelings for each other. Even though the war has ended, Kip must still face death countless times. In the end, at the request of the English patient, Hanna administers him a large dose of morphine...
