At the end of the Cultural Revolution, various media were filled with extreme leftist rhetoric and endless lies. Fu Bin (played by Li Zhiyu), who had just been transferred back to the newspaper from a labor camp, was very distressed about this. His colleague, reporter Li (played by Shi Jiufeng), advised him to take things lightly and not to be too serious, but the journalist's conscience constantly tormented Fu Bin. One day, at the request of the newspaper’s Secretary Song (played by Yuan Yue), he went with reporter Li to interview at a medical school, where he witnessed a ridiculous scene that greatly shocked him. In desperation, he sought advice from his old mentor (played by Qiao Qi), who had nearly gone mad for speaking the truth. Back at home, he and his wife reminisced about their first love and the pure and honest lives people used to have. He decided to seek out Secretary Song and ask him not to force him to write deceptive articles. His wife, fearing he would get into trouble, kindly advised him against it, but he couldn’t help but slap her. The upright Fu Bin was arrested for speaking the truth, but he firmly believed that the country would not remain this way forever...
