Twelve shell-shaped unidentified flying objects suddenly appeared in the skies above Earth, hovering over twelve different countries. The aliens sent signals to humanity, but humans were unable to interpret them. The U.S. military enlisted linguist Louise (played by Amy Adams) and physicist Ian (played by Jeremy Renner) in hopes that they could collaborate to decipher the mystery of the alien language. After several encounters, Louise discovered that the aliens used a highly unique circular script and gradually understood its intricacies. As the true purpose of the aliens' arrival on Earth remained uncertain, four countries including China and Russia decided to launch an attack on the aliens. The U.S. also chose to abandon research and evacuate all personnel. At this critical moment, Louise finally understood the aliens' intentions and, using the special "weapon" granted to her by the aliens, she changed the future single-handedly.
