Hanseck (Burt Lancaster) is a moderately famous newspaper columnist whose extensive experience has given him plenty of connections and resources. Susan (Susan Harrison) is Hanseck's sister, and one day she falls in love with a jazz musician named Steve (Martin Milner). Hanseck looks down on Steve, believing he has overreached in pursuing Susan, so the arrogant Hanseck decides to stop at nothing to break them apart. Hanseck finds a Manhattan news agent named Sidney (Tony Curtis) and manipulates him into becoming his "accomplice." Under their schemes, cracks emerge in Susan and Steve's relationship, leading to their eventual breakup. However, the narrow-minded Hanseck is unwilling to let Steve go and escalates his efforts to completely destroy the young man.
