The story takes place in the early 1930s when Lillian (played by Jane Fonda) goes to Vienna to search for her former friend Julia (played by Vanessa Redgrave). Upon arrival, Lillian learns that Julia was injured and hospitalized due to a violent confrontation with fascist supporters, and has since disappeared. After returning to her life, Lillian unexpectedly receives a letter from Julia, in which Julia requests Lillian's help in transferring fifty thousand dollars to an anti-Nazi organization. Despite the great danger this act implies at the time, Lillian agrees to assist Julia, and ultimately, the two long-lost friends reunite in Berlin. However, it is not long before Lillian receives the news of Julia's death, and in her grief, Lillian realizes that she has unfinished business.
