During the Liberation War in 1948, Company Commander Gu Zidi (played by Zhang Hanyu) led 47 soldiers of the Ninth Company to execute the task of covering the large force's retreat on the banks of the Wenhe River. Brigade Commander Liu Zeshui (played by Hu Jun) ordered that the sound of the assembly code would be the signal for retreat upon hearing it. The brutal war began amidst the roar of artillery, resulting in heavy casualties among the soldiers of the Ninth Company. Before his sacrifice, Platoon Leader Jiao Dapeng (played by Liao Fan) said he heard the assembly code, but Gu Zidi himself did not hear it; he decided to hold his ground. The Ninth Company repelled the enemy's attacks three times, destroyed two tanks, and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy. Except for Commander Gu Zidi, all 47 men from the company perished. This war changed Gu Zidi's life. Due to the unit's renumbering, Gu Zidi could not find his organization, and the martyrs of the Ninth Company were declared missing.
