Yang Tianqing (played by Li Baotian) has an uncle, Yang Jinshan (played by Li Wei), who is a dye house owner with a physical defect. After tormenting and causing the deaths of two wives, he spends a large sum of money to buy a young and beautiful woman, Ju Dou (played by Gong Li), whom he abuses in every possible way. As Tianqing approaches forty and remains unmarried, he develops feelings of love for Ju Dou, who cries out in pain due to his uncle's nightly abuses. They have an affair and conceive a child. Jinshan is overjoyed, believing the child to be his and names him Tianbai. However, soon after, Jinshan suffers a stroke, becoming partially paralyzed, and Ju Dou and Tianqing become even more reckless. When Jinshan learns the truth and seeks revenge, he accidentally falls into a dye vat and dies. According to family rules, Tianqing must move out of the dye house, forcing Ju Dou and Tianqing to communicate secretly.
