In 1911, German composer Aschenbach (Dirk Bogarde) arrives in Venice, burdened by the grief of losing his daughter. He hopes that the beautiful scenery of the city will alleviate his sorrow, but all the sights only evoke even more painful memories. Everything changes when he encounters the beautiful youth Tadzio (Björne Anderson) in the hotel, whose appearance resembles that of a Greek statue, making him tremble and lose himself in a whirlwind of excitement. Later, Venice becomes shrouded in plague, but the authorities deliberately conceal the news. Aschenbach gradually realizes the shocking crisis, yet unlike others who panic and seek to escape, he willingly embraces the risk of contagion and death in Venice just to see Tadzio one more time.
